Beginning this month, we will be doing a monthly (in place of the bi-monthly) news wrap-up on what’s going on in the Indian analytics industry. So for a quick review on the latest buzz in Indian analytics, look out for the blog on the last day every month.
Another starter is a themed calendar where we shall feature a “Start-up of the month” that gives you a preview on what goes behind such initiatives, together with related topics. This month, we featured blogs that covered the hot topic of election analytics and the start-up ZT Analytics.

# Continuing the ongoing trend of tie-ups and contracts from 2013, India’s Tech Mahindra acquired 75 % stake in US Big Data Analytics start-up FixStream Network Inc – to take advantage of the FixStream “technology platform that mines hidden insights, patterns and unknown correlations from huge amount of data in datacenters”. Tech Mahindra takes advantage of the in-depth integration and analytics platform developed by FSNI (founded in May 2013 by two Indians Abhinav and Sameer Padhye), that applies correlations never existed before – making silos redundant.
# TV Channel Network18 and Microsoft set up analytics centre for the India elections 2014 to create the CNN-IBN – Microsoft Election Analytics Centre. This leverages Microsoft software and hardware technologies to bring deep analysis, trends and data visualization during the General Elections 2014.
# The volatility of the Lok Sabha Elections 2014 has made analytics a core aspect offering insights like never before. In a latent move, TCS tied up with Twitter to create the iElect social tracker. “The app harnesses the power of social media, big data, analytics and mobility to make sense of what seems to be a complex web of conversations” besides engaging users to participate actively through the entire process in real-time.
# Keeping ahead with the dynamic character of the 2014 elections, Google India revamped its election hub to include features such as Pledge to Vote campaign, a ‘Google score’ tool for politicians, a search trend info-graphics, YouTube election playlists and Hangout series for users. While Facebook launched the election tracker app, an interactive dashboard to track conversations.
# Infosys merges data analytics operations under one roof, with an idea to increase its share of revenues from technologies like data analytics, cloud and social. The division, yet to be formally launched, proposes 300 specialists with plans “to recruit people with backgrounds in data sciences and statistics”.
# According to the PWC 6th Annual Digital IQ Survey, cloud, mobile, social, data mining, analytics and cyber security have emerged as the top investment priorities among companies in India this year.
# Another upbeat news on the analytics job scope front, demand for analytics professionals in India grew by 80% last year, as per the Analytics India Jobs Study.
#Wrapping up with an innovative application area of analytics. Meru Cabs, India’s largest radio cab service across 8 cities, has not stopped at its call centre service, but is also making use of analytics to analyse trends to predict and design cab availability. Now that’s entrepreneurship!
